Boots for Birds is a Maine-made product that lets you upcycle and honor cherished boots by turning them into a unique garden or yard feature that also provides housing for local birds. Your boot becomes the nesting space. We offer both DIY kits and ready-built Boots for Birds, all crafted from white cedar.
Do I send you my boots or shoes?
No. We ship the Boots for Birds (DIY kit or ready-built) to you. You then attach your own boots or shoes using the included instructions and hardware.
What materials are used?
Every Boots for Birds is made from clear white cedar—a durable, naturally rot-resistant wood ideal for outdoor use. All products are Maine-made.
How do I attach my boot?
Each Boots for Birds includes a secure mounting system and hardware so you can easily affix your own boot. Complete attachment instructions are provided with every order.
How high should I mount the birdhouse?
Height depends on your location and the bird species most likely to use it. For most small cavity-nesting birds (chickadees, wrens, bluebirds, nuthatches, and similar species), mount the house 5–15 feet (1.5–4.5 meters) above the ground. Some species, such as purple martins, prefer higher placement (often 10–15+ feet in open areas). Position it high enough to deter ground predators while still allowing easy access for occasional cleaning and monitoring.
Which direction should the entrance face?
Orient the boot opening away from prevailing winds. A common recommendation is to face it north to east (or northeast/southeast). This provides morning sun for warmth while shielding the nest from intense afternoon sun and driving rain. Facing it toward a favorite viewing spot is also fine, as long as the other conditions are met.
What maintenance is required?
White cedar can last for generations. Periodically check that the boot remains securely attached, clear out old nesting material after the breeding season if desired, and inspect the structure for weather-related wear. No special treatments are usually needed.
